ABOUT US

Carol Leigh and Chris Smith

Chris and I conduct photo tours and workshops all over California. I'm author of various California guidebooks, including Photographer's Guide to California Wildflower Locations, Photographer's Guide to Fall Color Locations, Photographer's Guide to Death Valley, and many more. I also produce PHOTO EXPLORATIONS online magazine (formerly California Photographer newsletter), a bimonthly publication devoted to encouraging you to get out of the house, travel around, and take pictures. I've been in this business since 1978, so I've gotten pretty good at telling photographers where to go!

Chris and I make an excellent combination, matching his technical expertise, people skills and cooking know-how with my twisted sense of humor, enthusiasm for photography, and ability to dispense information. Our photo trips, workshops and seminars are very casual, laid-back, informative and fun. About 50% of the people on our trips have been with us before, 50% newcomers, which makes a great mix.

I've been shooting since 1977, began selling my work in the early '80s, but have been writing about where to go to take pictures since 1978. My photos have appeared in various magazines, on school notebook covers, on plaques and greeting cards. I wrote a "calendar of events" column for Popular Photography magazine and have led photo workshops for various colleges in southern California. I'm a Navy brat, attended 22 different schools while growing up, and have made California my home all my adult life. Chris is an Orange County lad, having been born and raised in Tustin. Together we've lived in Orange County, San Diego County, downtown San Francisco, Palm Springs, Nevada City, and now (as of October, 2002) we are on the central Oregon coast.
